What is chromic acid?

Chromic acid is a strong acid, usually consisting of a dichromate dissolved in sulphuric acid. It is a very powerful oxidizing agent, predominantly used in industry but also laboratory settings. Although it is not flammable or volatile, the reaction with other materials can be potentially hazardous.

Chromic acid is not as frequently used as it once was, due to its toxic nature and development of new chemical and technological solutions for plating of metals.

When is chromic acid traditionally used?

Most chromic acid solutions are used in the metals plating industry, where acid itself acts as an intermediary for the application of the thin chrome layer.

Chromic acid is also used in restoration treatment of dull musical instruments - providing a distinctive colouring to brass. It is also commonly used in ceramic glazes and lacquer, as well as wood preservatives, circuit board and electronic components manufacturing.

What to consider if pumping chromic acid?

One of the key considerations for pumping chromic acid is the highly poisonous and corrosive nature of the chemical. As it’s a strong carcinogen, it’s recommended that there is zero exposure to employees and the environment. It’s important to note it may also be hazardous when reacting with reducing agents.

Global Pumps recommends using the Techniflo magnetic drive centrifugal pump for zero-leak applications. This type of pump ensures leak-free operation by utilizing a magnetic assembly to separate the motor drive from the pumping mechanism. As a result, the need for mechanical seals is eliminated, and an o-ring assembly is used to seal the casing pieces, preventing any hazardous chemicals from escaping into the atmosphere. In addition to enhancing safety, this seal arrangement reduces the costs associated with servicing and spare parts, as less maintenance is required throughout the pump's lifespan.

Techniflo magnetic drive pumps are available in a range of compatible materials for corrosive and hazardous chemicals.
