You’ve selected an air operated diaphragm pump because of its ideal flow rate, pressure, and durability. But there’s one problem… you need to install it upside down. This may be due to space requirements, but don't worry! There is a solution, spring loaded diaphragm pumps!
Diaphragm pumps with standard valve balls cannot work upside down because they require gravity to pull the valve balls back into their seats to create a seal. However, diaphragm pumps with spring loaded valves will work regardless of orientation and can run upside down.
Why Most Diaphragm Pumps Don’t Work Upside Down
To understand why the air operated pumps will not work upside down, you will need to understand the pumping principle.
When the membrane expands, a positive air displacement is created, which in turn pushes the valve ball upwards and allows the fluid to be pumped. However, when the membrane contracts, a closed seal is required to create suction.
How to Make a Diaphragm Pump Operate Upside Down
For a diaphragm pump to function correctly upside down, the valve balls must be in place to create a seal. It is recommended to use a spring-loaded valve. When fluid is pumped, the valve gets pushed open and the springs expand, allowing fluid movement. When the diaphragm contracts and the flow of fluid temporarily slows, the tension in the spring will push the valve shut, creating a seal for suction.
The Solution
Verderair has developed a great solution for pumps that must be installed and run upside down. Available today through Global Pumps, the VA08 has spring loaded valves that allows the pump to create an airtight seal during pumping regardless of orientation.
The VA08 may be small, but it packs quite a punch with a maximum fluid flow of 19 L/min and a maximum air pressure of 7 bars or 101.5 psi.
Other features include:
- self-priming and dry running
- high durability
- non-metallic
Due to its size, performance, and its ability to run upside down, the Verderair V08 is a great choice for delivering chemical dosing, ink supplies, surface finishing, and detergent delivery. Check out our air operated double diaphragm pumps for alternative options!
