MULTI-STAGE PUMPS

Multi-Stage Pumps

Multi-stage pumps offer a flexible range of flow and head, along with a high degree of energy efficiency. They are suitable for a wide range of applications where high pressure is required.

Features of the multi-stage pumps:

  • high efficiency, high pressure
  • inline design
  • easy maintenance
  • 304 and 316 stainless steel or cast-iron construction available
  • bare shaft pedestal, 2 and 4 pole speed versions

WORKING PRINCIPLE

Multi-stage centrifugal pumps include multiple liquid chambers (or stages) that are connected in series. As the fluid enters each consecutive chamber, the pressure increases - the more stages the pump has the higher pressure it will have at final discharge.

As the fluid flows into the inlet of the pump casing, it flows into the eye of the impeller. As the impeller is driven and rotated by the motor, it creates centrifugal force directing the fluid along the impeller vane. The fluid is pushed to the outer tip of the impeller vane where it enters the stage diffuser. This differs directs the fluid into the suction eye of the next impeller.

Depending on the number of impellers within the multistage pump, the force continues to push the fluid through each chamber.

Multistage pumps are used in applications where higher pressures are required.

APPLICATIONS

It’s important to note that depending on the application, a horizontal or vertical multistage pump may be required.

Multistage pumps can be incorporated into the following applications:

  • water supply and pressure boosting: pressure booting in buildings, hotels, residential complexes, pressure booster stations, supply of water networks, pressure boosting for industrial water supply
  • light industry: washing and cleaning systems, car washing systems, fire fighting systems, process water systems, machine tools (cooling lubricants)
  • heating, ventilation and air-conditioning: boilers, induction heating, heat exchangers, refrigerators, cooling towers and systems, temperature control systems
  • irrigation and agriculture: greenhouses, sprinkler irrigation, flood irrigation
  • water treatment: water softeners and demineralisation, reverse osmosis systems, distillation systems, filtration, ultra-filtration systems

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Multistage pumps are available in horizontal and vertical constructions. Depending on your application, Global Pumps will advise of best practice.

Horizonal Multistage Centrifugal Pumps

Global Pumps’ horizontal multi-stage pumps have segmented casing with modular inter-stage components. The rotating assembly is held between bearing housings, making the assembly more balanced for the higher pressures. It is constructed in a horizontal fashion to support a wide range of fluid types, including those with solids.

Vertical Multistage Centrifugal Pumps

Vertical multistage centrifugal pumps have a vertical shaft, with each component stacked one on top of the next. Like the horizontal version, the vertical construction has segmented casing with inter-stage components. However, the vertical construction is a smaller footprint, making it ideal for smaller spaces. They also have a small clearance, so solid-laden liquid is not recommended for vertical multistage pumps.
