Pump choice in the food and beverage industry requires different considerations than other industrial sectors. Food and beverage production demands pumps that meet today’s rigorous hygiene levels, but are also able to transfer products in a gentle manner.
Peristaltic pumps, also known as tube pumps or hose pumps, fulfil both of these requirements. They are ideal for pumping shear sensitive products, for example, pitching yeast in beer brewing, and due to their design, are perfect for the sanitary pumping required for many food and beverage products.
One of the most important aspects of food manufacturing is sterility. The ability to clean in place (CIP) and sterilise in place (SIP) is essential to meet regulatory hygiene standards and manage production costs.
In a peristaltic pump, the product is fully contained within the hose, so no contamination from the pump is possible. Additionally, the physics of the pumping action guarantee that there are no dead spots within the tube where bacteria or other contaminants could accumulate. The hose is the only component of the pumping system in contact with the product, the easy-to-sterilise and easy-to-change tube helps keep costs to a minimum.
